How To Attain the Love of Allah

Everything that pleases Allah is a means of attaining His love. The following are some of the ways in which we can attain the love of Allah:

1) Reciting the Qur’ān with tadabbur (reflection).

2) Drawing close to Allah by doing nafl (voluntary) actions after the farḍ (obligatory) ones, as Allah says in a ḥadīth qudsī, “My servant continues to draw closer to me with voluntary acts until I love Him” (Bukhārī).

3) Constantly remembering Allah with the tongue, the heart, and your actions. How much you remember Allah will indicate how much you love Him.

4) Preferring Allah’s love over your own love when your desire overcomes you.

5) Reflecting on the Names and Attributes of Allah, and immersing oneself in attaining the maʿrifah (deep awareness) of Allah.

TAWHÎD AL-ASMA’ WAS-SIFAT (ISLÂMIC MONOTHEISM OF ALLÂH’S NAMES AND QUALITIES)

Tawhîd Al-Asma’ Was-Sifat (Islâmic Monotheism of Allâh’s Names and Qualities) is to perform Monotheism for Allâh in His Names and Descriptions, and this should happen by confirming what He has confirmed among Names and Descriptions for Himself in His Book, or what His Messenger ﷺ has confirmed to Him as well; without any Tahrif (distortion) or Ta’til (suspension), or Takyif (adaptation), or Tamthil (likening). And what follows are the Rules of Names and Qualities.

The-Attributes-Sifat-of-Allah-1The Attributes (Sifāt) of Allāh: His Attributes are Dhātiyyah or Fi’liyyah or both.

Definitions: Sifāt: Attributes of Allah. Dhāt: The Self of Allah.

The categorisation of the Attributes of Allah is based on whether the Attributes are intrinsically bound to the Self (or Dhāt) of Allah or not bound intrinsically to the Self of Allah. So according to this, the Attributes are divided into three categories:

  1. Attributes ascribed to His Self (Sifāt Dhātiyyah).
  2. Attributes ascribed to His Actions (Sifāt Fi’liyyah).
  3. Attributes ascribed to both His Self and His Actions (Sifāt Dhātiyyah Fi’liyyah)

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, his companions, and those who follow his guidance. To proceed:

The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which lists the names of Allah, has become widespread among people. Allah is named with names that He did not use for Himself, nor did His Messenger use them, based on what is mentioned in this hadith. When I became aware of the scholars' assessment of this hadith as weak, I wanted to compile its various chains of transmission and the statements of the hadith masters regarding its chain of narrators and its text. After Allah granted me success in completing this research, I decided to publish it on this website so that the status of this hadith may be known, especially among the Salafis, for they are the people of sound creed and its defenders.

Praise be to Allah.

Knowing the Beautiful Names of Allaah is very important indeed, for the following reasons:

  1. Knowledge of Allaah and His Names and Attributes is the noblest and best of all knowledge, because the level of honour of any kind of knowledge has to do with the object of knowledge, and the object of knowledge in this case is Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, through His Names, Attributes and Deeds. Occupying oneself with seeking this knowledge and studying it properly is the pursuit of the highest objective, and acquiring this knowledge is one of the best gifts a person may be given. Because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained it very clearly and was very keen to do so, the Sahaabah never disputed in this matter as they did over some of the rulings (ahkaam).
