Quran verses about Dawah
مَا عَلَى الرَّسُولِ إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا تَكْتُمُونَ (99)
Not upon the Messenger is [responsibility] except [for] notification. And Allah knows whatever you reveal
and whatever you conceal. (Al Maidah 5:99)
Since in the Qur’an the word “da`wah” appears numerous times, only those verses that speak of or imply the preaching and spreading of Islam are dealt here. The following lines of the Qur’an contain the word “da`wah” with this connotation.
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌۖأُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِۖفَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ ﴿١٨٦﴾
If some servants of mine asked you about Me, I am indeed close and I respond to the call of a suppliant if he calls upon Me. So let them respond to My (invitation), so that they believe in Me and may be on the right side. (Al-Baqarah 2:186)
أُولَٰئِكَ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ ۖوَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ بِإِذْنِهِۖوَيُبَيِّنُ آيَاتِهِ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿٢٢١﴾
Those (unbelievers) invite to fire, and God invites to paradise. (Al-Baqarah 2:221)
وَلْتَكُن مِّنكُمْ أُمَّةٌ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَيَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِۚوَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ ﴿١٠٤﴾
Let there be a group of people among you who invite to goodness, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. (Aal `Imran 3:104)
وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ﴿٢٥﴾
And God invites to the abode of peace and guides those whom He pleases to the straight path. (Yunus 10:25)
قُلْ هَٰذِهِ سَبِيلِي أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِۚعَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِيۖوَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ﴿١٠٨ ﴾
Say, “This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him.”e . (Yusuf 12:108)
﴾…قُلْ إِنَّمَا أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ وَلَا أُشْرِكَ بِهِۚإِلَيْهِ أَدْعُو وَإِلَيْهِ مَآبِ ﴿٣٦
Say: I was commanded to worship God, and not to associate anyone with Him. I invite and my return is to Him. (Ar-Ra`d 13:36)
وَأَنذِرِ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ يَأْتِيهِمُ الْعَذَابُ فَيَقُولُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا رَبَّنَا أَخِّرْنَا إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ قَرِيبٍ نُّجِبْ دَعْوَتَكَ وَنَتَّبِعِ الرُّسُلَۗأَوَلَمْ تَكُونُوا أَقْسَمْتُم مِّن قَبْلُ مَا لَكُم مِّن زَوَالٍ ﴿٤٤﴾
And, [O Muhammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, “Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers.” [But it will be said], “Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?. (Ibrahim 14:44)
ادْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِۖوَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُۚإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۖوَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ ﴿١٢٥﴾
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided. (An-Nahl 16:125)
وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ﴿٧٣﴾
Indeed you invite them to a straight path. (Al-Mu’minun 23:73)
وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ﴿٢٥﴾
And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path (Yunus 10:25)
وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ﴿٣٣﴾
Who is better in speech than the one who invites to God. (Fussilat 41:33)
تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ﴿١٧﴾
Invite those who turn back and turn away face. (Al-Ma`arij 70:17)
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا ﴿٥﴾ فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائِي إِلَّا فِرَارًا ﴿٦﴾
He said: I have been inviting my people day and night, but my invitation increased but flight. (Nuh 71:5, 6)
Hadith on Da’wah: Guidance to Islam better than whole world
Abu Rafi’ reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “For Allah to guide a man by your hand is better for you than everything over which the sun rises and sets.”

1. Fulfill an Obligation Upon Us
Da’wah is recognised by the majority of scholars as being obligatory upon every Muslim. Therefore, we can interpret that the act of da’wah is something of great importance within Islam and more importantly to Allah 
. Consequently, by fulfilling our obligatory acts we can look to achieve the pleasure of Allah and get close to Him. As it states in a hadith, Allah says:
“…And My slave does not come close to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him. My slave continues to come nearer to Me through voluntary deeds until I love him, and when I love him, I become his ears with which he hears, I become his sight with which he sees, I become his hands with which he strikes, I become his legs with which he strides. If he asks Me, I shall surely grant his request.” [Bukhari]
This beautiful hadith highlights the massive reward of completing the obligatory acts that can motivate us to carry out this important duty. In contrast, it is worth considering the consequences of neglecting something that is obligatory upon us. For example, we understand Allah has prescribed 5 daily prayers and the severe consequences we may face for missing just one of those prayers. Consequently, we should give great consideration to da’wah before abandoning or even neglecting this and therefore look to making it part of our lives in some way, shape or form.

Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
In this fatwa:
- Dawah is the best vocation and the most excellent action a person can do.
- Being of this excellent place, dawah should be conducted with the highest level of morality, and the tools of dawah should be free from anything that contaminates it and diverts it from its way.
- There is nothing wrong with female converts asking men about the rulings of Islam. Women during the Prophet’s lifetime used to ask him about religious matters.
Shedding light on the ruling of men making dawah to women and the guidelines that should be followed in this regard, Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Muslim scholar and lecturer, states,
Islam has set out basic guidelines governing the relationship between men and women in a manner that achieves the aims of the Shari`ah.In addition, Islam aims at protecting Muslim men and women from the things that lead to fitnah (temptation).
